💀 Who was the oldest human ever found in the Americas?
💀 Luzia — Paleoamerican Story ▾
Luzia is the oldest known skeleton found in the Americas (~11,500 yrs old), discovered in Brazil in 1975. Her skull defied the standard Siberian migration theory — she looked like Aboriginal Australians, not Native Americans.
Walter Alves Neves — Brazilian physical anthropologist at Univ. of São Paulo. Found and identified Luzia in 1975. His craniometric studies showed her skull matched Australasian populations, sparking the "two-wave" theory of Americas colonisation.
Classic Theory: All Native Americans descended from Siberians who crossed the Bering Land Bridge ~15,000–20,000 yrs ago.
Updated Theory: A first wave of Australasian-related "Paleoamericans" arrived before the Siberian wave — possibly via a Pacific coastal route. Supported by ancient DNA (Reich et al. 2018).
🔥 Museu Nacional Fire (2018): The Museu Nacional in Rio de Janeiro, which housed Luzia's skull, suffered a catastrophic fire on 2 Sept 2018. ~90% of 20 million artifacts were destroyed. Luzia's skull was partially damaged but fragments survived.
